This story book by Michael Sowa tells the tale of « The Enchanted Flute » to children. Witty, elegant and dark paintings illustrate this classic yarn. This book fits wonderfully within the ‘Les petits dés rangés’ collection by offering a story that can please parents – through the finesse of its images and sly references – as much as children (6 and older) – through its simple story-line, its animal imagery and its colors. With characters worthy of Jean de la Fontaine, this work offers up an original, theatrical and sometimes disturbing world.
Michael Sowa is a renowned German painter and illustrator, whose well-known Bestiary was published by Le Seuil. It should be noted that one of his creations made it onto the cover of a 2002 edition of The New Yorker, and that two of his paintings decorate Amélie Poulain’s bedroom wall in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film. (A Bear Called Sunday, Esterhazy : A Hare in Berlin, and The Little King December have been published by L’Inventaire, and The Unexpected Gift by Casterman.)
Translated from German to French by Pierre Grammont.
